Real pipeline coverage calculator
"We have 3x coverage" is the most reassuring, and most dangerous, sentence in a forecast meeting. Three times what, exactly?
Now estimate what share of that pipeline, by value, falls into each situation. If you don't know, guess: the result will still tell you a lot.
Why a range: the same deal is often old, stalled and inactive at once. The worst case treats the three shares as if they didn't overlap; the best case, as if they were the same deals. The truth sits in between, and the exact number comes from filtering your CRM.
Why stated coverage misleads
The coverage ratio treats every dollar in the pipeline as equal. A $10k deal closing next week and a $50k deal that has been "almost there" for four months weigh exactly the same.
Finance sees 3x and plans around it. Reps see 3x and stop prospecting. Leadership sees 3x and considers the quarter done. Then the quarter closes and everyone is surprised.
Coverage isn't a number. It's a distribution: age, velocity, time in stage, last activity. Without those filters, you're reporting inventory, not pipeline.
How to make this number reliable
- Create a saved CRM filter with the three rules from this calculator and use it in your forecast meeting.
- A deal that lands in the filter two weeks in a row goes to review: it moves forward with a dated next step, or it leaves the pipeline.
- Report both coverages, total and real. The gap between them is the most important conversation in the meeting.
